Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

The scope of this curricular unit is all the area of Oncology. An overview of head and neck, mouth and salivary glands tumors is underlined. The main goal is to give students enough knowledge on general oncology and head and neck cancer that would allow them to master and integrate subjects of other adjacent areas.
Subjects such as oral cancer and salivary glands tumors are particularly focused in order to be used in a future professional activity and should be used as a bridge to acquisition of further knowledge in other curricular units.
It is intended a horizontal as well as a vertical integration of knowledge acquired.
At the end of the curricular unit, students should be able to recognize and describe the nosology of the entities previously studied and that are part of the curricular program.

Syllabus:
  1. Introduction to the study of oncology. The role of oncology in the practice of dental medicine.
  2. The oncologic disease in Portugal.
  3. Head and neck tumors. Diagnosis and therapeutic.
  4. Spinal cell carcinoma of the mouth.
  5. Oral oncogenesis. Pathology, epidemiology and etiology of the squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth.
  6. Biology of the squamous cell carcinoma. Local and regional dissemination.
  7. Pre malignant conditions.
  8. Clinical aspects of the squamous cell carcinoma. General principles and multidisciplinary approach.
  9. Diagnosis and staging. TNM and UICC classification.
  10. Therapeutics of the squamous carcinoma. General principles and multidisciplinary approach. Primary and complementary therapy
  11. Neck dissection.
  12. Prognosis.
  13. Follow up and chemoprevention.
  14. Radiotherapy. General principles, results and complications.
  15. Adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
  16. The association of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  17. Pathology and tumors of the salivary glands.
  18. Pigmented lesions of the mouth.
  19. Sarcoma of the head and neck. Odontogenic tumors.
  20. Orofacial reconstruction and rehabilitation and anaplastology.
