Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
The Curricular Unit aims to introduce and develop the knowledge in molecular biology related to genome expression, either by genetic or epigenetic influences. After attending the curricular unit students should be able to:
- Develop critical thinking and demonstrate ability to analyze and develop themes that focus on molecular mechanisms involved in the expression of genetic information.
- Explain the importance of Molecular Biology to understand structure, function and control of the normal or pathological genetic material.
- Select, apply and evaluate Molecular Biology techniques used in the study of the genetic material and proteins analyses.
- Know equipment and how to perform the techniques done at classes.
- Work on projects using techniques of DNA analysis.
Syllabus:
- Genome organization and gene distribution
- DNA classes
- Transcription regulation
- Secretion pathway and post-translation modifications
- Mitochondrial genome
- Proteins transport into the organelles
- Cellular signalling
- Laboratorial techniques of Molecular Biology
Lab practical classes:
Extraction of plasmid and genomic DNA.
PCR.
Transformation of bacteria.
Electrophoresis.
Reverse Hybridization.
Resolution of exercises through application of the concepts and principles explained in theoretical classes and/or work presentation.
