Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

At the end of the curricular unit “Hygiene and Safety at Work”, student should be able to:

  • Understand the general concepts of Safety, Hygiene and Health at Work.
  • Know the main legislation.
  • Explain the relevance of microbiology for health professionals, particularly in what concern to the control and prevention of diseases.
  • Acquire concrete notions of biosecurity in dentistry and in the laboratory of Dental Prosthesis.
  • Understand the importance of establishing rules and routines that minimize occupational hazards.
  • Relate good professional performance practices with the reduce of the number of microorganisms in the workplace.
  • Disseminate implementation strategies of universal precautions.
  • Use correctly the personal protective equipment.
  • Understand the reasons for maintaining and promoting good standards of hygiene, health and safety in the workplace.
Syllabus:
  1. Concepts of Hygiene, Health and Safety at Work. Legislation.
  2. Microbiology and health. Infectious agents.
  3. The oral cavity as a septic environment.
  4. Infectious diseases of dentistry interest.
  5. Importance of the CDC recommendations for the control of infection. Universal precautions.
  6. The cross-infection and the laboratory / professionals of dental prosthesis.
