Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
This curricular unit aims to provide knowledge about recommended food and nutritional intakes in all states of life cycle. It is also an objective to provide knowledge about all kinds of vegetarian and macrobiotic diets.
Considering this, the present curricular unit promotes the student's critical and analytical spirit applied to program content topics.
Students approved with success will have:
- Acquired exact knowledge concerning the programme contents in human nutrition.
- Analytic, synthesis and integration capacities about this subjects.
- The ability to integrate, associated and intervene in situations and similar contexts.
- The understanding about food and nutrition in life quality and individual health during all the stages in the cycle of life.

Nutritional needs and recommended daily doses. - GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE POPULATION
Food pyramid, Food Wheel, MyPlate, etc. - NUTRITIONAL NEEDS ALONG THE LIFE CYCLE
Nutrition in children and teenagers, as well as in adulthood and elderly. - THE NUTRITIONAL DENSITY
Concept and evaluation criteria. - BIOAVAILABILITY
Concepts, definition and applicability. - NUTRITIONAL STATUS EVALUATION
Nutrition semiology – signs and nutritional deficiencies symptoms, nutritional status changes.
The concept of undernutrition, malnutrition, marasmus and kwashiorkor. - INFLUENCE OF CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS IN FOOD CONSUMPTION
Studies about the effect of schedule and circadian rhythm in appetite and in energy levels as well as in food choices and habits. - VEGETARIAN AND MACROBIOTIC DIET
Types of vegetarian diets and nutritional deficits associated.
Macrobiotic diet principles.
