Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

The curricular unit of Public Health aims to foster the acquisition of knowledge around:

  • Concepts and evolution of public health, health and disease, evolutive patterns of mortality and morbidity, quantification of health; health determinants.
  • Biodemography, epidemiology and epidemiological studies.
  • Pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoepidemiological studies.

This curricular unit also intends to provide students with the needed competencies to analyse and debates scientific themes in the aforementioned areas.

Syllabus:

The general content of this curricular unit intends to encompass the three areas considered core to public health. These will be covered sequentially during the theoretical programme, whilst the practical programme aims to support the acquisition of knowledge fostering its practical application through the resolution of exercises or development of work appropriate to the theme in question. As such, the theoretical programme comprises the following modules:

  1. Key themes in public health.
  2. General notions of epidemiology.
  3. General notions of pharmacoepidemiology.

The practical programme aims to provide the student with the necessary means to develop a research project in the area of public health. Additionally, it is intended to consolidate the acquisition of knowledge provided in the theoretical classes in a way that facilitates the development of technical and scientific competencies in this area.
